Trip to Parliament

Trip to Parliament

Last month Grade 11 students went to the Parliament of Canada Building in Queen`s Park, with Mr.Varol Soyler. The building was quite huge and impressive, but things we saw inside were not as magnificent. We were guided by a humble Canadian tour leader.  She was very kind to us and explained every object or situation that we asked her about, and explained a lot of things we may have  had a different or incorrect understanding of to correct us. We also had a little sketch that explained the process of making law: It  began with the levels of government, Federal Government, Provencal Government, Municipal Government. But none of these  Government levels have more power than the Queen. Canada is still a colony of England, and because the process of making law includes something called `The Mace` it allows the Parliament to make laws , and it has to point to the party that has puissance.
If there is no mace that means no legislation. Aside from that there is a special class that protects the mace from any kind of harassment. After the sketch we went to the upper level of the building, where we saw the remnants of a big fire that occurred in the building 100 years ago, as well as portraits of every single Prime Minister on the walls. Our guide then expressed that she
literally “loves Queen Elizabeth II”. On our way to the exit, we passed all the names of all the Members of Parliaments on the wall. At the end we saw “The Old Mace” which was made of wood and covered in gold; and then we saw “The New Mace”, which was made of pure gold, and it was much more impressive!
